why animate?
Animation often adds a level of clarity which simply isn’t achievable with mere static images. This is especially true when explaining processes with multiple steps.
example
static version
animated version
Compare this series of four static images—used to explain a series of moves for a puzzle cube—to the animated version. Though either could be used effectively, the animated version is much more clear.
engagement
Animations can also increase learner engagement. This is another reason I often create custom animations for training presentation decks, explainer videos, and micro-learning content.
hand-drawn
I also create hand-drawn animations. Though these can be much more time-consuming to create, they tend to have a “friendliness” which makes extremely complex subjects less intimidating.
